Student Teacher FAQ

When will I receive my certification letter of intent once I submit the Certification Information Form?

For fall clinical teachers, the certification office will send out the certification letter of intent by the end of October.  For spring clinical teachers, the letters of intent will be sent out by the end of March.

When may I apply for my standard teaching certificate and complete the fingerprinting process?

TEA requests that students completing their final semester of teaching, wait until they have completed all certification requirements, including clinical teaching/internship, before they apply for their standard teaching certificate. However, CEHD will allow students to begin applying for their standard teaching certificate beginning April 15 (for spring student teachers/interns) or November 15 (for fall student teachers), as long as you have completed all content and PPR exams. If you have not completed all content and PPR exams by those dates, you may apply after you have done so.

What costs are associated with submitting the application for a standard teaching certificate?

A fee of $77 is required to submit your application, and must be paid online. Please note: students will only submit one application, regardless of the number of certificates you are seeking. For example, a student seeking the Generalist EC-6 and ESL Supplemental certificates will only submit one application and list both Generlist EC-6 and ESL Supplemental as "Subject applying for" on the application.

Can I go anywhere to have the digital fingerprinting completed?

TEA requires that applicants for a Texas certification must be fingerprinted through the DPS vendor, MorphoTrust USA. A fee of $39.50 is required for processing of fingerprints though DPS, FBI and TEA. TEA requires all applicants for certification pay this fingerprinting fee online. An additional fee of $9.95 is paid to MorphoTrust at the time of appointment - this fee is assessed for scanning of prints. A FAST Fingerprint Pass is issued, by email, to the applicant by TEA once online payment has been made; a fingerprinting appointment cannot be scheduled without this document. This document, along with a valid photo ID must be presented at the time of appointment. Fingerprinting results are received by TEA typically 3-5 days after the appointment. Digital fingerprinting through MorphoTrust is offered at over 80 locations currently. For a list of current sites, click http://www.l1enrollment.com/locations/?st=tx

I had digital fingerprinting done when I was a substitute teacher in my school district, do I need to have them done again?

If you were a substitute teacher in your school district and had digital fingerprinting done at that time, TEA recommends that you wait 2-3 days after you submit your standard teaching certificate application to choose a fingerprinting method. If your previous fingerprinting is in their database, they should sync up with your application during this time. If this does not occur, you may contact TEA at 512-936-8400 and let them know that you have had your “digital” fingerprinting done previously.

Will I be recommended for my certificate as soon as I complete my clincal teaching, even though I have not graduated?

The Certification Office will not recommend you for your standard teaching certificate to the State Board for Educator Certification until you graduate and all grades have been posted on Howdy.  In addition, you must have completed all required TExES examinations, applied for your standard teaching certificate, have no holds on your Texas A&M University record, and submitted the required Certification Information Form to the Certification Office. Please note: the recommendation process may take up to 3-4 weeks after graduation to complete, depending on the number of students that need recommending.

If I graduate in the spring but do not complete my clinical teaching until the following fall, will I be recommended for my certificate as soon as I complete my clinical teaching?

NO.  The Certification Office will not recommend you for your certificate to the State Board for Educator Certification until all grades have been posted on Howdy.  In addition, you must have completed all required TExES examinations, applied for your standard teaching certificate, have no holds on your Texas A&M University record, and submitted the required Certification Information Form to the Certification Office.

If I marked that I wanted ESL on my Certification Information Form, but do not complete the ESL exam by the time I graduate, will I be recommended for my content area teaching certificate(s) without the ESL?

NO.  If you marked that you wanted ESL on your Certification Information Form, and you do not successfully complete the ESL Supplemental exam, we will not recommend you for any teaching certificates, unless you have notified us. You may send an email to the Certification Office stating the following items:

  • You wish to be certified without the ESL Supplemental teaching certificate
  • You understand that in order to add the ESL Supplemental teaching certificate at a later date, you will need to apply with the State Board of Education Certification (SBEC) for an additional certificate and pay the appropriate application fee.

Will I be able to graduate if I do not complete all of my TExES exams?

YES.  Successful completion of your TExES exams is not a requirement for graduating from Texas A&M.  The TExES exams are state mandated and you must complete the appropriate exams in order to be recommended for your standard teaching certificate.

How can I add additional certificates once I have been recommended by Texas A&M?

You can find more information about the process of applying for additional certificates at this website, http://tea.texas.gov/Texas_Educators/Certification/Additional_Certificat...
